• care for patients who are acutely unwell or have enduring mental health problems
• ongoing assessment of mental state, behaviour and psychological needs
• management of acute episodes of care
• the development of therapeutic relationships with patients to encourage trust
• assistance to patients to develop the skills to manage their emotions and behaviour
• response to distressed patients in a non-threatening manner
• open communication with patients to allow them to express their needs
• care planning and risk assessments for individual patients
• co-ordination of the care of patients
• liaison with patients, relatives and other professionals to ensure regular meetings to review and monitor patients’ care plans
